What Makes One Drug Legal And Another, Not So Legal?
..there was some kinda new trend….and so almost everywhere I passed I would find these small, silver coloured containers. My first guess was that they involved something intoxicating. Maybe a special alcoholic concoction?
I soon learnt that the containers carried ‘laughing gas’.
Is this really how sad our youths are today have become?
Now laughs aside…
Used for Recreational Purposes – What are ‘legal highs’ ?
In a nutshell, legal highs generally refer to chemical substances that produce similar effects to illegal drugs, incidentally, at the time of writing, I am just being informed that legal highs are not currently observed by the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. Which overall allows untested drugs to be purchased legally.
Legal highs openly carry brand names associated in some way to intentionally emulate known illegal drugs in their marketing promotions.
It is therefore highly questionable (…oops – I did it again!), that knowing legal highs are LEGALLY AVAILABLE DRUGS that are known to cause a high rate of deaths, compared to users of drugs that are NOT LEGALLY AVAILABLE.
– Now that does not sound logical or at least the intended effect – does it?
Familiar brand names that circulate the realms of legal high users, are the terms ‘Spice’ and K2 , both ‘legal’ substances used to describe synthetic cannabis. These designer drugs attempt to mimic the effects of cannabis, however do not contain the chemicals which would otherwise make them unlawful.
So easily accessible, at one level along the chain involved in the process of supplying legal highs; buying the basic manufacturing substances can be a simple transaction that takes place under the impersonation of the buyer purchasing for domestic chemical research use. Which subsequently leads to untested substances finding a way into the public domain and sold legally.
So, Who Made ‘Legal Highs’ Legal?
The thing that allures me regarding the whole human furor over what is known as ‘legal highs’ , is that as far back as i can recall I had never encountered the term legal highs being used, at least not to the point of even being noticed. Journeys through primary education , secondary and further education, right through to nights and mornings overlooking the Ministry of Sound and the ‘boat crew’ that ensued at the Embankment, London UK, on a Sunday Morning.
Now suddenly, out of nowhere there is a whole new craze about ‘legal highs’.
The other day whilst in Brixton UK, a noticeable number of silver coloured miniature bottles, immediately a recollection of having seen a similar image whilst strolling through a park in Hackney.
This must be some kind of new drink – were the thoughts, Imaging the bottles contained an energy ‘blah blah’.
However, the decision to still enquire further lead to the understanding that the bottles contained laughing gas. Flabbergasted to learn that not only were humans, young teens, taking nitrous oxide for a ‘laugh‘ but also these bottles are legally available alongside those ‘legal highs’…..
